Job Description

Company & Role Overview

Our client is a large, respected player in the energy and infrastructure construction industry, known for its unwavering commitment to safety, efficiency, and innovation. As they continue to grow, they are expanding their prefabrication operations and investing in cutting-edge processes. They are seeking a process driven Prefabrication Process Engineer to lead improvement initiatives in their shop operations. This is a high impact role where you will drive lean methodologies on the shop floor, optimize workflows, and collaborate with multiple teams to take prefabrication efficiency to the next level.

In this role, you will serve as the subject matter expert on prefabrication processes. You’ll analyze current shop layouts and production workflows, identify opportunities for improvement, and implement changes that streamline operations. If you have a passion for continuous improvement, cross functional teamwork, and turning data driven insights into real world results, this opportunity is tailored for you. It’s a chance to shape the prefabrication strategy within a forward thinking company that empowers its employees to innovate and excel.

Key Responsibilities

As the Prefabrication Process Engineer, you will be expected to lead and innovate across all aspects of the prefabrication shop. Key responsibilities include:

  • Shop Layout Optimization: Design and refine shop floor layouts to ensure a smooth, efficient workflow for all prefabrication activities. Identify and eliminate bottlenecks to maximize productivity and space utilization.
  • Workflow Streamlining: Continuously monitor fabrication and assembly processes for opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce waste. Implement lean manufacturing techniques (5S, Kaizen, Six Sigma) to enhance process flow, minimize downtime, and shorten lead times.
  • Lean Process Implementation: Champion a culture of continuous improvement. Develop standardized work procedures and best practices that align with lean principles and business priorities, resulting in improved quality and reduced costs.
  • KPI Tracking & Analysis: Develop and track key performance indicators for prefabrication operations (e.g. cycle times, throughput, on-time delivery, waste reduction). Use data analytics to identify trends and proactively drive process improvements, reporting progress and results to senior management.
  • Cross Functional Collaboration: Work closely with logistics, procurement, and project teams to ensure prefabrication efforts align with project schedules and requirements. Coordinate just-in-time material handling and inventory management with procurement and warehouse staff to avoid delays and shortages.
  • Project Coordination: Partner with project managers and field teams to set realistic fabrication timelines and ensure timely delivery of prefabricated components to job sites. Adjust workflows as needed to meet project deadlines and adapt to changing priorities.
  • Safety & Compliance: Uphold the highest safety standards on the shop floor. Ensure all prefabrication processes comply with company safety policies and industry regulations. Promote a safety first mindset while also meeting quality standards in fabrication.
  • Team Leadership & Training: Lead by example to foster a continuous improvement mindset among shop employees. Provide training, mentorship, and support to production teams on new processes or lean practices. Encourage feedback from the shop floor and involve team members in improvement initiatives to build buy-in and sustain changes.

Qualifications & Experience

The ideal candidate is an experienced manufacturing/process engineer who can blend technical expertise with hands-on leadership. Key qualifications include:

  • Education & Background: Bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field.
  • Industry Experience: 8+ years of experience in a manufacturing, prefabrication, or industrial production environment, with a proven track record of process optimization and efficiency improvements. Experience in construction related fabrication or modular construction is a strong plus.
  • Lean Manufacturing Expertise: Deep knowledge of lean principles and continuous improvement methodologies. Practical experience implementing lean tools (such as value stream mapping, 5S, Kanban, Six Sigma) to streamline production workflows and reduce waste.
  • Shop Operations Knowledge: Hands on experience with shop layout design and workflow optimization. Familiarity with production equipment, tooling, and best practices for efficient shop operations.
  • Technical Skills: Comfortable working with data and analytics to drive decisions. Ability to develop and monitor KPIs, interpret the results, and implement changes based on data insights.
  • Tools & Methodologies: Familiarity with Virtual Design & Construction (VDC) processes and/or Agile Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) techniques is a plus. Experience with project management or scheduling tools used in fabrication and construction will be beneficial.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Strong ability to work across departments and teams. Proven experience collaborating with procurement, logistics, engineering, and project management to achieve common goals.
  • Leadership & Communication: Excellent communication skills with the ability to lead training sessions and present improvement plans to both shop/floor personnel and senior management. Demonstrated leadership in driving cultural change towards efficiency and safety.
  • Problem-Solving: Creative and analytical mindset for troubleshooting process issues. Comfortable leading root cause analysis and implementing effective solutions in a fast paced production environment.

Compensation & Benefits

Our client is prepared to offer a competitive compensation package to attract top talent for this role. Details include:

  • Base Salary: $125,000 – $170,000 per year (commensurate with experience and qualifications).
  • Health Benefits: Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision insurance plans.
